BuddyPress sends emails as notifications of stuff that happens on a site. It doesn't offer a stand-alone email sending and I strongly don't think it should; that'd be getting very close to being an email newsletter plugin. In the private messages component, we have a "send sitewide notice" button (it might be called something slightly different) that:

1) Puts a message into the sidebar (of the BP-Default theme)
2) Sends an email notification about that message

Maybe you could re-use this feature for your purpose if you use the private messaging component.

Well maybe the functionality you are describing can actually achieve what I am looking to do. Where exactly is the site-wide private message option? I can't/couldn't locate it.

Becuase what I did do earlier was send a message to the entire community. It appeared in the sidebar quite nicely. But I was also hoping that everyone would get an email alert to the effect that something was posted to the site. My disappointment (and cause for this ticket) was that the entire community did not get notified via email that some activity took place.

I do not want a "newsletter" capability. Merely a mechanism to tell everyone that they should log into their Buddypress to see a new post.

Kindly, let me know if that truly already exists and where...

Thanks @DJPaul

I'm going to have to agree with DJPaul that an email blaster is beyond the scope of what BP should do. We provide member-to-member messaging because we're a social networking plugin. Admin emails to all members don't fall into this category. Moreover, admin emails would require a bunch of new UI work, in addition to various technical considerations (like the fact that mosts hosts will balk at sending the same email to more than a couple dozen people at the same time).

Consider using a plugin like http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/email-users/.

Ok, thanks @boonebgorges. So when we use the "send sitewide notice" button the result is only to display a notice on everyone's sidebar? There is no way for BP to also send an email tickler that there is new content on the social site?

Just looking for clarification so I have clear understanding of BP functionality. Thanks.

I believe it does *not* send out an email notification, because of the technical considerations I mention above.
