Member search ignores visibility of xprofile fields (shows everything)

Description

The members search (in directory) searches through all profile fields and shows all results to all users. For example if the visibility for a profile field is set to friends only, the member search includes these results to non-loggedin or non-friends, too.

Yes, you're right that search wouldn't be taken into account. It'll be challenging to find a universally scalable solution, but we can do at least something for 1.8.
