inconsistent notification total/notification counts in user nav

The numbers next to tabs are for total counts.

The mentions tabs is a notification and does not follow this. Seems like bad UX. AKA one of these is not like the other.

maybe have (total count) and then if new do ( 1 new )

This really should be either for notifications or counts, but never both.

I've never liked the counts as prominent as they are. Maybe we come up with a filterable function to allow toggling it, so a new experience can be opt-in?

Agree that it would be nice to have these consistent. My feeling is showing counts here is better.

We're closing this ticket because it has not received any contribution or comments for at least two years. We have decided that it is better to close tickets that are good ideas, which have not gotten (or are unlikely to get) contributions, rather than keep things open indefinitely. This will help us share a more realistic roadmap for BuddyPress with you.
