Description
Hi all
I'm really eager to develop a range of bare-bones 'default setups' for BP which would enable developers to quickly launch projects from a pre-defined list of potential applications such as:
- default
- social
- corporate intranet
- dating
- academic
- niche interest communities
- project management
- etc.
Each 'default setup' would include a bespoke front-end theme with the appropriate functionality, plugins, labels and site structure already setup and filled out with niche specific demo data / images to demonstrate it's real life usage.
I'm happy to tackle everything on the front-end side from initial design concepts, artwork and illustration through to the slicing and dicing but I will need the guidance / involvement of a friendly coder to make this all happen.
Ideally someone that is:
- already familiar with buddyPress / wordPress / template mods
- able to create corresponding CSS to make my designs work on page
- able to make template changes/tweaks if required
- able to suggest plugins or work-around's to achieve particular usage goals
Back-end wise there would be no changes to buddyPress itself although it would of course be nice to add a 'default setup selector' to the admin as part of the BP config process after install ;)
Anyway, hope that raises someones interest and thanks for reading.
Marc

I like this but it feels more like theme + plugin as opposed to 'BuddyPress core' to me. I'd personally love to see more bolt on plugin / theme combinations showing different flavours of BuddyPress so like the base idea. Maybe a demo site / series of sites could be even a route for this.
Perhaps it's more a community effort similar to what we did with the Status theme though or are doing with the new UI. I'd lean to having it as a community thing though and release on wp.org or through Github. I'd be happy to be part of a community effort if it was being released back to the community and open to both front and back end contributions.
If you want to do it partner style, perhaps teaming up with a developer is the way to go outside of core at least for a one proof of concept? Commons in a box is a great example of this. Maybe float this idea on Buddypress.org see if you can get some interest there?

I would hope each template would require only theme design and pre-selection of standard BP features either enabled / disabled, and some changes made to the dictionary?
The idea would be to demonstrate how easy it is to re-purpose BP for typical project uses by shipping it with a handful of default templates.
There would also be potential afterward to go-on to produce premium/commercial variations of these base themes as a commercial proposition if that was of interest to the developer I worked with.

If you're going to go the commercial route trac isn't the best place to start that. I'd suggest if this is going to be for profit it gets removed from trac and into buddypress.org discussions on the forum.
However, I still think it be cool as a non profit community project if truly showing the potential.

This is not a commercial endeavor which is why I said "...potential afterward to go-on to produce premium/commercial..."

- Milestone Future Release deleted
- Resolution set to wontfix
- Status changed from new to closed
I'm pretty sure that this is not a Core functionality, and agree with @karmatosed - theme + plugins.
BuddyPress should not made assumptions regarding networks types. So closing this ticket.
design-marc - Have you seen http://commonsinabox.org? Is that what you have in mind?
