Description

We need to have options to be able to turn off the sitewide, user and group activity streams independently of each other.

I don't think this merits an option, as it's a theme issue (both the templates, and the nav bars).

Fair enough but I dissagree from a UX point of view. The majority of people who will install 1.7 will not understand how to work the loop. There is already the option to disable activity but having 3 different feeds can be overwhelming. There should at the least be an option to turn off group activity on a group per group basis just like forums.

I guess I don't really understand the request. You want to hide activity altogether? Or you just want to disable the ability for users to post directly to the activity stream (remove the What's New box)?

Paul's right, templating can remove activity streams BUT thats a developers hand. Most people will not know how to do this. Forget original post, just having an off switch for group activity would be benificial. This would be usefull for forum based sites.

So this really describes an enhancement where we let a group admin turn on/off display of the activity stream for a specific group? (just like they can do for forums)

Exactly, it's a needed option.

In case of switching this off, we need to think about the new default page for group for logged in user that is member and NOT member of this groups, and logged out user.

Currently public group has Home, Members, Send Invites, Manage pages. Any of these pages except Home (imo it's better to have it be called Activity) can't be a home page for a group. What should we display in this case? I don't see an easy solution here.

In case of switching this off, we need to think about the new default page for group for logged in user that is member and NOT member of this groups, and logged out user.

How about Members? This seems reasonably safe. I'm not sure why it matters whether the visitor is logged in - for public groups, the behavior would be the same for members/non-members; for private groups, non-members would get the default "this group is private" page in any case; and hidden groups can't be accessed by non-members.

Makes sense.
We will also need to remember about our group front page template, so it should overwrite our seems next default Members page.

BUT.

We changed the focus to site builders and developers, and these groups of people basically know about templating. So I believe that it might be ok to leave it as is. I don't remember users complaints or feature requests on support forum for them to have this option configurable via admin area.

Any objections to close as wontfix?

We're closing this ticket because it has not received any contribution or comments for at least two years. We have decided that it is better to close tickets that are good ideas, which have not gotten (or are unlikely to get) contributions, rather than keep things open indefinitely. This will help us share a more realistic roadmap for BuddyPress with you.

Everyone very much appreciates the time and effort that you spent sharing your idea with us. On behalf of the entire BuddyPress team, thank you.

If you feel strongly that this enhancement should still be added to BuddyPress, and you are able to contribute effort towards it, we encourage you to re-open the ticket, or start a discussion about it in our Slack channel. Please consider that time has proven that good ideas without contributions do not get built.
