#3382 closed defect (bug) (wontfix)

Comments and Favorites on Arbitrary Activities.

Description

When viewing recent activities it makes no sense to have the ability to comment or favorite things like seeing my friends or random folks have become friends with someone else.
Also, seeing them join groups is another that sticks out as not needing comments.

I know this wont be for 1.3 but thats the version I tested on.

I disagree. I like this. For example, someone can congratulate someone for joining a group (or if groups were changed to restaurants/etc.) or whatever. Although I'm not sure if it makes sense to Favorite updates for joining a group, though. And the same goes for commenting on "Member A is now friends with Member B" - I may want to say "Hey, I didn't know you guys even knew each other!" or something else.

That's pretty much the idea. We provide (at least, we do in 1.3) filters on bp_activity_can_comment_reply() and bp_activity_can_favorite() so you could tweak it with a tiny plugin which you could drop into /mu-plugins/ and then forget about.

Right. The presence of these new filterable functions allow for fine-grained tweaking.

I honestly think it would be something I turn off on every site I ever create with BP. BP seems to be the only network of mine that allows this basic ability. How often do you comment on your friend becoming friends with someone else? or joining groups? I know linkedIn tells you when your friends join groups, but there's no ability to comment on it.

Also, seeing when they register and being able to favorite that is weird too..
I'm glad its there to be off/on but I feel like some of the activities are excessive and being able to comment/favorite everything is overbearing. I'll upload a mock up after.

But who are you to tell people what they should or shouldn't Favorite or Comment on? :P

BP isn't just used for a "Facebook-like" or "Linkedin-like" site - favoriting and commenting on these things may make sense in some contexts, like the examples I gave above.

And a little plugin could do what you want.

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

I'm closing this as a wontfix because we think allowing commenting on and favouriting any activity stream item is best for core. The new filters we've added in 1.3 will let people tweak these; it would be a useful plugin, I'm sure.
