Attachments for Buddypress

Reported by: imath's profile imath Owned by: imath's profile imath
Milestone: Awaiting Contributions Priority: high
Severity: normal Version:
Component: Media Keywords:

For a group site that uses buddypress we would like to be able to attach files in the group function. There are a couple plugins that do this but because these plugins were all updated either years ago or more than half a year ago none of them work with Noveau or with Buddypress in general. Either they give errors or do not do anything at all anymore and do not upload the documents needed. If possible could you please add this as a feature to the buddypress core.

  • Milestone changed from Awaiting Review to Awaiting Contributions
  • Owner set to imath
  • Status changed from new to assigned

Thanks for your feedback, we’ve been discussing a lot on the subject in the past and I think your ticket duplicates with #6004.

We have an Attachments API in Core. But I believe we can work on a plugin about it. There’s an existing one on our GitHub repository and I plan to restart working on it soon.

  • Keywords needs-patch added
  • Milestone changed from Awaiting Contributions to 6.0.0

Let's do this in BuddyPress 6.0.0!

  • Milestone changed from 6.0.0 to Up Next

Huge progress were made during 6.0.0 dev cycle, see the GitHub repository, but not enough to have something ready before release date.

@imath can you add a feature that will add a global photo directory for users to explore photos like instagram (display images in grid format with 3 or 4 columns)

  1. Ability to set or disable storage limit for photos for users
  1. Ability to enable or disable photo upload on activity page but only enable on profile tab.

Thanks for your feedback. I'll keep it in mind. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find the time to progress on the feature during the 7.0.0 release cycle. I'll do so asap (next development cycle).

hello, since the last update, I don't remember what, if I activate "BP Attacment" I can't comment on buddypress activities anymore.
When I try to comment I get a 403 wp-admin / admin.ajax.php error

Actually I am using version 1.2.0 which worked until a few days ago.
Then I made some updates and from December 12, if it is active, it does not allow me to comment on the activities of Buddypress.

If I check for the error via no comment, the Google Chrome inspector returns me

"wp-admin/admin.ajax.php 403 ()"

If I turn off the plugin there are no errors and it allows the comment to appear

Hi @blenderitalia

It's surely not relative to the BP Attachments plugin which is a work in progress and shouldn't be used on a production site.

I believe your theme is doing some template override and hasn't been updated since 7.0.0. I advise you to look at this development note we published to alert theme authors about the change we introduced into some templates of our Template packs:

I have installed this version of BP-Attachment
as version 1.0.0 never worked.

I know that I shouldn't use this plugin in production but it's the only one that allows users to post videos without them going to personal collections.

I read the post you linked to me ... I already have version 7.0.0 of Buddypress and tonight I also tried version 7.1.0 but without results ... if I activate the BP-Attachment 1.2.0 plugin and try when you comment on an activity, the comment is not visible and there is an error in the inspector (wp-admin / admin.ajax.php).
I have downgraded Buddypress to version 6.4.0 and everything works perfectly.

In your opinion, it is possible to correct this error ... maybe this experience of mine can be useful to you.
I can also log you into the site to see how it is organized.

In my opinion, with these problems fixed, the plugin should be integrated into Buddypress as it is really useful.
For the Community I use Rt-media but users don't always want to post the videos in their portfolio because it is a community based on 3d and users use a lot of work in progress

Hi @blenderitalia

If you are using a fork of BP Attachments, then you need to contact the person who created this fork, that is to say:

I’m afraid I can’t help you there else than telling you you shouldn’t use our BP Attachments plugin or fovoc’s one on a production site yet. It’s not stable enough.

I think this is not the right place to discuss about your issue, if you need to carry on discussing about it please open a new support topic on

We need more time to progress on this.

it is a pity that images and videos released by BBpress or Rtmedia cannot be posted on the wall

Guys can you clarify if the plan is to store attachment metadata somewhere in the database. Or are we going to keep doing it the “buddypress way”

The reason I ask is that I had a quick look in the code on GitHub and I can’t see any database storage.

Please tell me we are getting attachment metadata in the database? I really hope I’ve just missed something. If not this new api is fundamentally flawed.

The BP Attachments Add-on is fixing this ticket. It's available on the WP Plugin directory and improvements about it can be requested from there:
