Description
In Jabber, I can create a shared roster. Everyone I add to the roster gets the roster as a named buddy list. This makes it easier for everyone in a group to get started because they skip the tedious steps of adding buddies. Also available are magic rosters that add new members automatically. This would be ideal for private BuddyPress installations.

Sounds like plugin territory to me. Good suggestion though.
