Feature Request: Email Notifications on Group Activity (opt-in by default)

I would to request email notifications for group activity à la Facebook Groups, on by default with easy opt-out options.

I know this feature partially exists in bbPress, but I find its UI really clunky and cumbersome, and the notifications are not on by default, requiring often novice users to find a checkbox to receive notifications.

To me, this is an important feature for those of us trying to build fledgling community sites, since users are not likely to manually sign on to your site just to check their notifications.

We're closing this ticket because it has not received any contribution or comments for at least two years. We have decided that it is better to close tickets that are good ideas, which have not gotten (or are unlikely to get) contributions, rather than keep things open indefinitely.
