This should be fixed in 2.2. We moved markup and JS to use WordPress's current approach.

I remember fixing the identical issue in some previous version of BP, but I can't find the ticket. modemlooper, can you please verify the versions of BP and WP you're running?

I ran across this about the same time a John did and mentioned it, and iirc it was fixed, at least have a recollection of not needing to look further.

I believe this is no longer an issue since @JJJ has made improvements to Profile Field/Groups UI in #6313 and #6318.
