preview image of post broken when image is not a separate file

I copied an image via copy and paste directly into the wordpress editor. (image is shown via: img src="data:image/png;base64,.....)
The preview image in the activity view is broken.

Viewing the broken image shows me

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /activity/image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAkMAAABaCAIAAAA0HcW2AAAQCUlEQVR

Fixing this would be great!

Is this a BuddyPress problem? If you disable BuddyPress and try this, does the problem go away?
