Description

Creating/Managing groups isn't exactly easy for an admin trying to set up a BuddyPress community. Maybe it's simple, but it's quite tedious.

Let's make managing groups use the same UI paradigm as the rest of WordPress and also make it easy for our users.

@ddean has a plugin http://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-group-organizer/ that comes pretty close and could possibly form the basis of such functionality in core.

Yes, there's a working plugin for this but surely great improvement in usability for everybody qualifies this for inclusion in core.

That UI is used for menus in WordPress however the one for categories is probably more similar to groups. Also the menu UI has had an overhaul in that latest version of WordPress away from that.

Perhaps exploring outside the box UI would be a good idea here? For multiple levels that drag and drop doesn't make so much sense for groups. There is after all a groups UI already in core now for BuddyPress - using that as the starting point probably is best.

I would say though that plugin needs http://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-group-hierarchy/ to get hierarchy.

@karmatosed That UI is used for categories as well in WordPress.

I suspect you've never used http://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-group-organizer/ to set up a new community. There's a world of difference in efficiency and ease between this plugin and BuddyPress's default functionality.

I suggest you try running a small test with a few users to see which UI helps them create/rename 10 groups faster. And/or a heatmap could be good.

@sooskriszta you suspect wrong :) Categories in WP vanilla does not behave like that plugin my point about like for like stands.

However, if you notice my comment wasn't focusing just on that one plugin. It was about looking at the great work done in the groups UI in 1.7 and about exploring should this be thought of as something to run with.

  • Milestone changed from Awaiting Review to Future Release
  • Summary changed from Group management backend to Group management enhancements
  • Version changed from 1.0 to 1.7

Fair points.

We added backend group management capabilities in 1.7, but are missing a few things compared to WP's Posts / Pages admin management page.

Just to summarize the enhancements:

  • Group creation capability missing in group management area
  • "Quick Edit" menu row item missing

We're closing this ticket because it has not received any contribution or comments for at least two years. We have decided that it is better to close tickets that are good ideas, which have not gotten (or are unlikely to get) contributions, rather than keep things open indefinitely. This will help us share a more realistic roadmap for BuddyPress with you.

Everyone very much appreciates the time and effort that you spent sharing your idea with us. On behalf of the entire BuddyPress team, thank you.

If you feel strongly that this enhancement should still be added to BuddyPress, and you are able to contribute effort towards it, we encourage you to re-open the ticket, or start a discussion about it in our Slack channel. Please consider that time has proven that good ideas without contributions do not get built.
