Blocked out of wp control panel when changing buddypress language

I'm trying to translate the budypress plugin into Portuguese, however every time I place the .po and .mo files, as directed by the site br.buddypress.org, I lose access to my wordpress control panel (get an Internal Server Error message). I can only regain access to the control panel after I rename the buddypress plugin folder, so as to cancel out the plugin.

With the buddypress in its original form, I also tried installing other buddypress language related plugins, and get the same error message.

Interestingly enough, the site itself does not crash, just the control panel.

It looks like the info on br.buddypress.org is out of date.

Try following the instructions listed here:

Language files for BP 1.6 can be found here:
