«Notify group members of changes via email» switch not working

WP 3.4.1 - BP 1.6.1 - bp-default theme and no other plugins

Go to ​https://…/groups/test/admin/edit-details/ where
«Notify group members of changes via email» per default is set to «No».

Change it to «Yes», click «Save Changes» and you will get
«Group details were successfully updated.» in the group header -
BUT: setting is still «No». One email is sent out to group members -
but setting is no, no more emails are going out for group activity.
