Description

The "Switch to WordPress Toolbar" option on the BuddyPress settings page exists only when you select the checkbox on the BP Update Wizard.

Now, navigate back to the BuddyPress settings page, check "Switch to WordPress Toolbar" and save the settings. You are now no longer able to view this option.

Some users on the support forums want to know why this option disappeared.

I've already directed these users to the 1.6 upgrade codex article that it's possible to override this in bp-custom.php, but I think we should reinstate this admin option.

Attached patch reinstates this option regardless if the WP Toolbar or BuddyBar is installed.

This was done intentionally to migrate users off rather than allow them a choice of bar to use. I'm still strongly against this. We'll be removing the BuddyBar from a future release.

I agree with DJPaul that it's a good thing to migrate users away from the BuddyBar. However, I've always thought (and feedback is bearing out) that the current method of migration is quite heavy-handed, especially given that users are unlikely to read directions.

All things being equal, I would prefer Ray's patch, plus a big, scary sounding warning along the lines of "Using the WordPress Toolbar is highly recommended. The BuddyBar will be deprecated in an upcoming release."

Yeah, I had a feeling the current behavior was intentional! :)

I'm in favor of what Boone suggests; but this will introduce a new string. It's up to you guys!

I don't mind too much if you want to add an option in on the 1.6 branch, but am against this for 1.7.

The core team have decided to force-switch to the toolbar if you're upgrading from <1.6. If you've already opted out in 1.6, your choice will be still honoured, and we'll provide documentation on the codex as to how users can manually revert back to the BuddyBar in 1.7 if desired. Everyone should plan to move to the toolbar, because the BuddyBar is deprecated and likely to be removed in a future release.
