Did I mark it as a bug? My bad.
Also, I meant it as a feature for the bundled theme (the set of templates) as opposed to for BP Default.

I understand that work for 1.7 is in full swing. Perhaps time to reconsider?
In fact, in the new theme, it might be worth considering providing option to:
- Have sections as tabs (status quo)
- Have a long profile page with everything (except streams) on it (drag and drop to select what goes before and what goes after)
- Convert all sections into widgets. Then folks can place how and where they want, including placing some BuddyPress streams into their WordPress sidebars.

Most Social networks from Facebook to Orkut to LinkedIn do it this way.

- Milestone set to Future Release
I'm with DJPaul that this is mainly a theme issue, but I'll move to Future Release in case someone wants to provide a patch.

I feel this is down to the theme choice as you can do this in a BuddyPress theme. I'm not sold on core having this rolled into it myself as feel it's more down to the site than something should always be on.

I see your point.
In the real world, though, there is no such thing as a BuddyPress theme (ok, I exaggerate...there are 3-4..but : 1. that's not nearly enough, 2. with universal compatibility templates being bundled into BuddyPress, BP-specific themes will reduce).
Key options should be built into Admin UI and bundled templates.
This is an enhancement request, not a bug. It is also very closely tied together into the theme. We don't want to change BP-Default to work like this, because of concerns with backwards compatibility and style changes; it'd be a pretty significant difference. It could be implemented into a custom theme.
We are planning major changes to how BuddyPress themes are done in the next 1.7 version of BuddyPress. If we decide to build a new theme for 1.7, we will keep this in mind (it is possible that BuddyPress may not ship with a bundled theme).
