Activation fails

WordPress 3.2.1, BuddyPress 1.5 on Lighttpd

I tried registering a new user and got the activation email. However, upon clicking the link, I am directed to ​http://example.com/activate/?key=c8b35e526f61d4448df3d730133dcb89

Activate your Account

Please provide a valid activation key.

I try pasting the key into the field but activation still doesn't work. Even worse, there does not appear to be any way for an admin to force-activate an account.

It probably means that the account is already activated. Use the plugin ​http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/unconfirmed/ to view and activate unactivated accounts.

Please post support requests at http://buddypress.org/support. If this turns out being a BP bug, please reopen the ticket with steps to reproduce.

No, the accounts were definitely not already activated. I have to use that plugin to manually activate all new accounts.

Is there any way I can debug why the activate page isn't working?
