Avatars are randomly lost

Description
Some users happen to — randomly — be lacking their Avatars. Sometimes, just one of the images disappears, sometimes both.
Sometimes, the links are reverted to the (nonexistent) originally uploaded file and the issue can be fixed by manually changing the entries in the bp_users DB, othertimes, the whole http://mydomain.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/avatars/$foo/ Directory is wiped.
