It would be nice to have the ability in the group editing to allow change the slug (permalink) for the group.

There's a plugin for this in the WordPress extend repository.

It does open up some other issues, like forum topic and post links changing, etc...

Feel free to discuss, but judging by the age of this ticket it's a need best filled by a plugin.

Adding it as a core feature is likely to introduce lots of problems, because changed group slugs break all existing links to the content. We don't have a graceful fallback system for changed permalinks, like WP posts do. For now, let's leave this to a plugin. If we ever overhaul groups to have a different storage mechanism, we can revisit.
