It would be really nice if there was some sort of human verification element to the sign up process. I noticed that I was getting bombarded by spammers when I allowed open sign ups. I did look for a module that would have this functionality, but there wasn't anything that really worked.

You can use SI Captcha plugin. It adds the captcha.

It will not stop all the spams, but helps to decrease the volume of spam.

If you put these security measures in the core spammers will just work around it. It's better that each developer setup his own set of security measures. Im closing this.
