Using 'Recent Blog Posts' widget causes major problems in alternate theme

Description
If I'm running *any* theme other than buddypress-home in the root wpmu blog and add the 'Recent Blog Posts' widget, it trashes the sidebar widgets. As soon as I add that widget to a sidebar things go haywire. All default widgets (if any) are added to random sidebar areas. If I add widgets to a sidebar area they don't show up. If I add the Recent Blog Posts widget all of a sudden *all* the buddypress widgets show up in the theme. It only seems to be the Recent Blog Posts widget that does this. Welcome, Sitewide Activity, Groups don't do this.
I've duplicated this using the Tarski and Thematic themes on both my development machines and on my dedicated virt server. Happens both places.
