Description
The do_action call for the 'bp_core_avatar_save' action is missing in the trunk codebase (at least).
It exists in this version of the file http://svn.wp-plugins.org/buddypress/tags/1.0/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php.
There are two add_action calls for this action in bp-core.php. Obviously either the do_action needs putting back in the code, or more likely, the add_action calls updated.

The code has changed completely for avatar handling, so maintaing these actions is not possible.
