+This question comes up frequently, but is harder to answer than one might think. The short answer is that "BuddyPress" as a piece of software does not attempt to operate for-profit, but the volunteer developers behind the project either work for a company that is already using BuddyPress or providing consulting services, or are volunteers/freelancers/contractors generous enough to donate some time back to improving the software.
