Description
With the introduction of the enhanced activity stream in BP 1.2 communication improved a lot. Forums are used less and less, most is done from within the global activity stream but users can't reply on forum posts. I was asking myself if it would be possible to utilize the actual activity stream technology to build some way of new forum based on "Forum-Activity-Items". It would require an additional selectbox that would enable users to make their "Update" a "Forum Post" with a Topic Title.
I did a mockup about my idea, please find the attached screenshot.

A great, GREAT, G R E A T idea!!! To me it seems like a solution to all kinds of discussions around that topic, that already were going on! It seems simple and totally BP! LOVE IT! Your "mockup" lookes really good to me, too. I event would think (maybe just one some sites) to kick the name "forum" (or make it editable). In our cases "discussions" would be great and seemed to be even more logical... you have "update" and "discussion".

Activity streams will probably stay separate from bbPress. Closing this ticket and moving discussion into the above mentioned forum topic.

Punting. There's another ticket somewhere where Boone and I commented on possible UI confusion regarding adding functionality to the postbox like way. I'll try to find it..

Returning to the original ticket description, I still think that creating a lightweight discussion forum based off of the activity streams component would be a cool idea for a plugin (it's actually an idea I had a long time ago, but didn't have time to implement).
Closing because this is a plugin idea and also that bbPress 2 now exists for robust forum functionality.
